MANY German POWs who were held on the Air Base (That would become Myrtle Beach Air Force Base) Dad told me that many of the POWs were mild mannered and very nice. He could walk right up to the fence and chat with them. Many had no desire to return to Germany and settled in the US. One made a toy out of wood for my Dad. Dad did tell me there were a couple of hard liners that killed themselves after Hitler did.
Also....About 6 of the POWs were Submariners who rowed a raft to shore and were found casually walking down the Beach. As if they wanted to be caught.
