I don't think it's why I have a fascination with aviation... which began before Sputnik. 21Dog may be right, however. 
OK, so kind of related.... every kid is asked what they want to be when they grow up. You know the answers... a fireman, a policeman, an astronaut..... the first thing I wanted to be, I swear this is true, was an 'archaeologist'. Even "I" when I think back about that think, "Weird Kid".
