I've thought the same about horse racing announcers. . .

As the horses (to me) all look the same. Yet they know each horse and exactly what it's doing.

One time when I covered auto racing, I was up in the press box at a short, dirt-track race with like 6 cars. The announcr asked me if II wanted to call a race and like a fool said I would. I completely blew it. I couldn't even move my eyes fast enough to see who was in first, second and third no less identify who it was.
