For a grown man the danger from a mountain lion, cougar, is very VERY low. Like most animals their first instinct is to get as far from you as possible. There are exceptions, of course... but very few.
Once they establish themselves in close proximity to humans their shyness abates, somewhat.
A full grown man could most likely fight off a mountain lion... a child no.
In my close encounter the lion was trying to hide from me, (and was)... and once I moved he wanted away from me as quickly as possible. Humans aren't natural prey for lions... the lions on my ranch prey on deer, small mammals, calves (I'm unaware of any attack on a full grown cow and if that had happened I would have surely heard about it).
Only my opinion but I would say the threat from a lion is less than that of a black bear... which as you know is very low as well.
I know of a couple people who have been attacked by black bears... the last was a fellow backpacker, (I wasn't with him during the attack) who was attacked in his sleeping bag BUT... he had food on him... the bear was after the food and only attacked when the guy startled the bear by awakening when he bear went for his food. Few scratches, nothing serious. I know of no one who has been attacked by a lion.
