You mention 'friends'... do you mean handymen? A good handyman, a rare thing these days, can save you a literal fortune compared to professional installation, (the term 'professional' used in places like Lowes, HomeDepot, is VERY generous).

For example... we have a local handyman who is quite good. I did an estimate at HomeDepot and Lowes for a new tile shower.... Lowe's and HomeDepot right at $6,000. The Handyman? $1,500. - JamesJM

We had a guy who was going to tear it out and then put a victorian tub in and then redo the walls. But when he got here, he just sat on the tub and said "did you try bath fitters?" Because this is a lot of work and money. lol... I think he just didn't want to do it. Its weird but its been this ongoing thing.

I have considered trying marine paint. I would paint a uniform oval around the bottom of the tub and then put some sand in so it seems like its a no-slip thing. It should further prevent it from leaking and it might look OK.

Another idea I had was to put a WHITE fiberglass tub in that matches the size and try not to mess up any of the surrounding/attached marble. There is a similar, non whirlpool drop in tub at Home Depot for about $850. I would use all of the existing marble as it is and just kind of drop the tub in. Although I think it would be very tricky and we'd still have to get lucky.

Here's the home depot drop in. So, everything would still be marble except for the tub drop in. If everything is the same size (from my measurements its close) and shape (arc)...
