I knew about the AF Base near there and just recently someone... geez but my short term memory is going, told me exactly what you just did.
I wonder if it was 21Dog... I had spoken about this to only a very few people before posting this, 21Dog was one.
Here's the deal regarding my family and cold weather. We're like you have it, but worse.... we don't really have a winter, not even close actually - although we do get foggy day chills that are unbearable, even for people that come from very cold climates - they have a tough time on our foggy wintry days. But my family doesn't 'know' cold weather... yes, we go to the snow in the High Sierra's, and often... skiing every year. But that's not the same, I try to tell them.
Dealing with 'colder' than our ski areas weather, and doing it for months at a time... is something they can't comprehend and THUS, they think it would be 'fun'.
Now the truth is... I haven't really dealt with it either... I lived in New Jersey one winter and that was unbearable. I spent two winters in Germany and that was physically painful for me... there was no 'fun' involved, with some exceptions.... love Europe's Christmas Markets... hot wine, ice skating... but the daily struggle to work and live in that kind of weather was miserable for me. And neither of those places come CLOSE to IowaRams's winters.. or several other's on this board.
For a day, I think a weekend, and perhaps even a week... I'd love it. It would be 'new', it would be 'fun', (dressed in my expedition Cabela's winter wear)... but after that I think it would kill me. - JamesJM
