Here's what I can remember, and it's little. I remember the shot, very well. And I remember it was a 'top name' in the game but I do not think one of 'the' top players, like Borg. Not much to go on, huh?
But back to the top spin shot, it was like no other I've ever I've seen... or check that, I HAVE seen other players hit it but rarely, it's not their staple... the guy I'm thinking of played that way. And here's what made it so unique...
The top spin shot you describe is more like you normally see, and it's the type I 'sort of' got down... very low over the net, very hard. This guy hit it HIGH over the net, like I said... off the racket you would swear it was a lob.... but it was like a baseball pitchers sinker... get to 5' over the net or so, (just a guess), and then nose-dive straight down... OR... he could hit almost to the baseline with the same effect - HIGH deep into the court and then just suddenly nose dive straight down. It was unique. - I'll review some older players on youtube and see if I can find him. - JamesJM
