That's likely because you grew up in the central valley. If I'm not mistaken "beach" volleyball began along the beaches of So Cal and was part of the surfing explosion in the late 50s and on into the 60s. We lived in Manhattan Beach in the 60s and the volleyball tournaments next to the pier was a huge thing-but free. I recall seeing Keith Erickson of the Lakers and UCLA come down to compete along with Wilt Chamberlin. Lots of partying and drinking. Good times. And lots of women ! If you have ever tried to run hard in the sand for a long period of time you know how in shape these guys and girls really are. Just as surfing has exploded across the world so has beach volleyball. There is also a voyeuristic quality to it as well. The guys like to watch the girls cause they all look great and the girls like to watch the guys cause they all look great.
