there are very few trails left in the High Sierra's that I have not hiked. My longest journey was back in 1994 when I hiked the John Muir Trail from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney.... 220 miles, plus I took a few side trips, another 9 miles to the road, for a total of near 300.
This trip I'm planning is a middle section of the John Muir Trail, one I have hiked... but my grandson's have not. I chose it for the diversity and I think it best represents what I'm after.... solitude and spectacular views. To get there I'll hike over Bishop Pass, from the eastern slopes.... a trail I have NOT hiked. The hike begins at South Lake near Bishop, Ca. Over Bishop pass, then over Muir Pass, down through Evolution Valley and out at Florence Lake, (somewhat near home, 3 hr drive).
Drones are amazing, I may buy one.... and I understand their use. But like you there are times, a LOT of times, that I want quiet... and they are noisy contraptions. I'm not too worried about running into any on the trail I described above... far too remote an area... only hardcore hikers visit. Always possible to come across someone filming for a book or something however.
Of course, I'm not sure I'm capable these days of getting into the degree of shape I need to get into for such a trip... even though it's not long, maybe 50-60 miles, it's very up and down. Two major passes to crest. If I can't I'll temper my plans and choose a shorter and less rigorous route.
I've told you before.... I think, if I had another life to live I would choose a South Sea Island to do it. Geographically it's the #1 location on my bucket list. THAT is how much I envy you. - JamesJM
