One good deed

August 05, 2026 09:16AM
I ordered a new cat6 ethernet cable which is supposed to be delivered to my house sometime today. Frank was taking the dog outside and as he stepped out onto the porch he hollers "you've got a package". Oh, good. It's my new cable. As soon as I saw the package, I knew it wasn't the cable. It was a small brown gift bag stuffed with red tissue paper and embossed with the name Julia on the outside. Inside was an empty mason jar embossed with a University's logo and personalized with the name Julia. There was a card in the bag addressed to Julia as well. it wasn't sealed, so I opened it hoping to find out who the heck this gift was for, since it obviously wasn't intended for me. The card was a high school graduation card and was signed "The Walsh family". It included a $50 Mastercard gift card. I've lived in my neighborhood for 32 years and other than the 9 houses on my street, I don't know the occupants of the other 40 houses on the other two cul-de-sacs on the hill where I live. But I figured with a bit of sleuthing, I could figure out the right address.

1) I looked up 2026 graduates named Julia from the high school that serves my neighborhood. There were 3 listed with their first and last names.
2. I chose one and looked up her last name in my neighborhood. By jove, it showed there was a family with that not-so-common last name on one of the other cul-de-sacs.
3. I actually drove my car around there but the house numbers didn't match up with the houses on the street so I wasn't sure which one was the right one. I found myself pacing back and forth in front of 6 houses. I was wearing baggy shorts, a really old t-shirt, and I look like a soup kitchen regular. Anyhow, I finally took a chance and walked up to one of the houses that had a car in the driveway and another car parked on the curb in front of the house. Figured at least somebody would be home and they could point me to the right house.
4. I rang the doorbell twice and nobody answered. I was walking back to my car when a young man finally opened it. I asked if this was the Walsh residence and he said it was. I told him I live about 2 blocks away and that I was there to return a gift which had been left at my door but wasn't mine. He said, Oh, that's for my sister. I told him I had to look through the bag and the card in order to figure out where it was supposed to go, but everything is intact. He seemed grateful. I went back home, happy that the gift found its way to the right person.

My good deed for the day!
