My wife got interested in genealogy not long after we got married and continued the rest of her life. She had DNA tests done on a bunch of family members. She still gets an email occasionally that they found a possible match where our DNA linked up to someone else's, and I believe she followed up on those when she got them, at least as far as contacting individuals to see what relatives matched up, and if they had information she didn't have.
So it can be useful. I'm not sure how accurate the results are as far as telling you where your lineage comes from, but at least as far as clues you can pursue.
