I've never taken a DNA test, but my brother and sister did one of those tests online a few years back. I think they did it out of curiosity more than anything.
My dad was an only child. He grew up with about 8 guys in his circle of hometown friends. These guys were all close friends, all of them were about the same age and they stayed close friends from birth till death and everything in between. Two of the men were identical twins and they were particularly close to my dad his whole life. Their father founded a successful family-run mortuary and the twins helped him run it. It's still in operation today and being run by some of the grandchildren. When the mortuary was first established back in the 1920's, my grandmother's family home was located about a block away. The families in the area all knew each other. When I was a kid, the children of these 8 men were all friends too. We weren't close like our dads were, but we knew each other and used to play and hang out whenever our parents got together. As we grew up, the twins' kids used to see us and they'd say "Hey, cuz!" They were always referring to us as "cuz". I always thought that was weird cause we are NOT related. But you know how some people call anybody they know really well "cuz" so I just chalked it up to that. I never called THEM that cause I don't roll that way. Anyhow, when my brother had the DNA test run, guess what? It came back showing that we are related to the twins kids!!! WTF?? My brother called one of the twins' sons to figure out what all this means. Come to find out, everybody in their family knew the truth. Me and my brothers and sister are the only ones who didn't know. The patriarch/founder of the mortuary was not only the twins' father. he was also my dad's father!! I don't know if my father knew this while he was alive, but I have a feeling he did. He just never bothered to tell us about it. I see now why the twins' kids always referred to us as "cuz" .
Even though the DNA says we're related, I don't consider them family and never will. I can't have grown up thinking my family consists of certain people and then in the twilight of my life find out it's something different. I'm not a "the more the merrier" kinda person. I'm happy just to leave things as they were presented to me my whole life. Even though it's incorrect, I'm ok with the truth I grew up with at this stage of my life. I'm happy just to leave it be.
