When I was a bellhop (2 years) 16-17 I worked at a WV Resort. 1 of my many duties was to step in at the front desk when someone went to lunch or they were short handed. The main job was running the switchboard. Yes the plug in switchboard. Someone calling out, their room would light I'd plug in talk over the headset and switch them to the out going line and vice versa with calls coming in.
It was kinda daunting at 1st but actually was pretty cool over a short period of time. Switching calls from rooms, to offices to buildings. The outdoor pool, the golf course, the lower lodge etc.....My mom at 1 time worked her way through school doing that in NYC at some high highfalutin company...LOL...
When I watch those old B/W movies they sometimes have an operator scene at 1...that's what I was doing for a half hour or so a day....Now a days? I can't even handle a smart phone with any semblance of authority.....LOL
