My grandparent, Mom's side....

June 02, 2026 03:31AM
Owned a home at the end of a Drive-In in the small town of Dos Palos, Ca. They had 3 daughters, (my aunts). When we'd visit he'd send his daughters over the back fence of the Drive-In to turn all the speakers up in the last row. Then we'd sit on lawn chairs on his front lawn and watch the movie.

There were actually quite a few Drive-Ins somewhat close to where I lived. The closest was in Mendota, 12 miles away. Firebaugh, (Josh Allen's hometown), had one in the country... about 18 miles away... then the Dos Palos one.

Fresno, the big city and about 35-40 miles from me, had several Drive-ins. Just a guess but I'd say there were 10-12 of them within an hour of me until the late 60's.

There was once a movie theater in San Joaquin, 5 miles from me, but it closed down before I was born. - JamesJM
