In the end, the human mind cannot fully comprehend the concept of "infinite," whether it be with respect to time or distance. As soon as you try to put a beginning or end point on either, the mind goes to "well, what happened before that?" or "well, what's outside of the physical endpoint?"
In the end, we're Lloyd Dobler, trying to figure out our future, getting in a seemingly endless loop, and taking comfort in that which we can comprehend and control ("I can't figure it all out tonight, so I'm just going to hang with your daughter." )
