I coached football..... youth and HS.....for.... oh geez.... 15 years? Maybe longer. Started in 1973. I couldn't wait until my son was old enough to play and I'd coach him.
That day came.... he grew old enough. Here is what he told me, "Dad, I want to play Ice Hockey". My reply:
"WHAT THE HELL? ICE HOCKEY? We live in Calif - - where the hell are you going too play Ice Hockey?".
Well... Fresno did have a youth Ice Hockey league. I had never heard of it. My son had seen a game when attending a birthday party with one of his friends. My son insisted.
And so it came to be. I never coached my son in football. My son never played a single down of football in his life. He played ice hockey into his early 20's.... and I became a fan. We traveled to ice rinks all over the western USA.
When my son made his decision I knew next to nothing about Hockey..... by the time he finished his first year playing I was one of Ice Hockey's biggest fans.... and follow it to this day. - JamesJM
