Seem to advance medicine like nothing else does. I remember back in the 80s there was a hydroplane driver that was going to lose his arm after a bad crash. A doctor attached his arm to his mid section to keep the blood supply flowing to the arm. He had to keep it like that for months but it saved the arm. Was a big write up on it in the paper, I think the same procedure has been done a few times since.
