When I was a kid, one year I remember my parents saying "Ok, you can pick ONE present from under the tree for your birthday."
There were 4 kids in my immediate family, plus we had aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins all spending Christmas together at my grandparents' house so there were quite a few presents under the tree. I found a few with my name on them and as I reached for them my parents would say, "but NOT that one. And no, not this one either. Nope, put that one back." What the? I'm disappointed and exasperated until they finally said, "you can have this one... or that one there". I was about 8 or 9 yr old, I think. I always felt like my birthday took a back seat to Christmas so although Christmas was fun, my birthday was not the fun it seemed to be for other kids. It's not a big deal to me now, but it sure was then.
