A couple of months after my wife died I found the journal she kept in 1977/78 the year before we were married.

Her description of our first date reminded me that my 1976 Spirit of America Chevy Impala 2-door had split bench seats, and we never wore seat belts. It seems very odd now that we would have ever gotten into a car and not put on seat belts. That car had them, we just never used them.

I got into the habit of always putting them on after watching a driver safety video in which an Oklahoma State Trooper said he had never unbuckled a dead man. Now, if I decide to drive to the end of the driveway to check the mail rather than walk, I will realize when I stop at the mailbox that I put my seat belt on without even realizing it.
