I tried to take a screenshot of it but couldn't. Haven't checked yet but maybe Prime, and other movie channels, somehow don't allow screenshots? Not sure how it would be possible to stop that.
But anyway -
I was watching the old classic "Double Indemnity". Stars Fred McMurray and Barbara Stanwyck - - and both playing a role you would never expect them to play. "Bad guys/gals". Squeaky clean Fred and Barbara... who would have thunk it? So there is a scene where Fred is feeling the pressure, the coppers are closing in.... so he needs to unwind.
He goes to a Drive-In Restaurant... you know the kind, or maybe most of you do not? You pull up in your car and order thru a microphone and THEN, like magic, a pretty girl comes out with a tray, holding your order, and attaches the tray to your window. When I was a teen that was basically how I went out to eat... always a "Drive-In".
I'd get a burger, a coke, sometimes a shake...... but one thing I NEVER got, served on a tray at a Drive-in, was a bottle of beer. Fred did. Fred McMurray I mean. Yup.. pretty waitress brings out a tray holding a single bottle of beer and attaches it to his driver side window. WOW.... that really caught me by surprise.
The movie takes place in LA so I guess that was 'common' there back then? I don't think Fresno, (closest big city to me), served bottles of beer at pull-up drive-ins.
They did something else in that movie that amazed me. They all smoked... didn't everyone back then? I smoked cigarettes starting about my Senior Year in HS then quit right after I got out of the Army and my son was born..... but during my smoking days I could easily strike a wooden match using the fingernail on my thumb. Yes, I was super cool. BUT... usually took me a couple three tries to get the match lit.... NOT for Fred and Edward G Robinson in the movie.... ONE strike, every time, without fail. So I guess I was just not quite as cool as I thought I was.
So anyway.... beer on a tray at a drive-in...... does ANYONE remember that option? - JamesJM
