Weather allowed takeoff, weather on the return was questionable and the Battle of the Ardennes needed air support. Pops group did its job and then had to find a place to land back in England.
They did, and my dad said there were B17s parked everywhere possible.
So they went to the officers club, decorated for the season and all those officers drank the club dry. Because of all the extra people , pop slept on the floor of the officers club. I'll mention my dad was a first Lieutenant, he woke next to a full bird colonel.
His last mission was Dresden, group above got out of position and dropped its bombs through pops. His group scattered, some ended up landing in Poland and the rest joined up with another group and made it back to England.
ETA...pop passed on 3/29/2024 A few weeks short of 101 still living at the house where I grew up .
