There still existed, back then, several B-17's still flying. The cost of keeping those WWII aircraft airworthy is astronomical.
My dad and uncle , moms brother , were at an air show and B 17 rides were being offered. My dad said they thought about for a minute and decided against another flight in one.
Pop flew 35 missions as pilot or co pilot out of England.
My uncle flew 50 as a navigator out of North Africa and Italy.
