On my "Around the USA" Motorcycle trips I took many 'small roads'... avoiding Freeways, Highways. Outside of my home State where I DID travel Freeways I was mostly on small rural roads. I didn't chart it but I'd guess I was 90% small roads. Not often but I also traveled a few dirt and gravel roads.
IMO, Freeways are more like 'flying' across the country... you miss almost everything. I'm not AGAINST freeways... they are fast if you're in a hurry. That's why I used them in my home state - they got me out of Calif. quickly.

And here's the BEST thing about the 'small roads'.... people don't use them EXCEPT... the best kind of people.

What I mean is... when you bump into another traveler on a small road you've just made a friend. Not many, not few either, people out there love the off the freeway/highway roads and almost without exception you have a 'bond' with them... be it in a car, an RV, or a motorcycle. - JamesJM
