I know it was or is now considered a movie for "kids" but I think adults "get it" as well. The adage of watch what you wish for can be used for all ages. The songs, the actors were also high level, that was a very talented cast.
I think also that when you add in it was the precursor to color being used in film, and showing how color could change the concept of film and how it could alter the minds eye to film was very important. Not to mention that flying monkeys are boss.
