As I've told before.... The Miracle On Ice is the greatest sporting event I've ever witnessed. Others may differ about the 'greatest'.... but I can unequivocally say that for me the 1980 Miracle On Ice was #1.
I don't know how many times I've seen that movie.... to be honest.... but I can say 50 would be close. And even after 50, (or however many times it's been), I still break out in a sweat during the final 20 minutes of that movie.
Gotta repeat this... in 1980 I was a fanatical runner.... 6 miles a day and on Sunday's I'd run a minimum of 12 miles and not rarely I'd run over 20. I did NOT run for 'time'. That was never important to me UNTIL... my brother-in-law was bragging about his mile times and was constantly asking me what my 'mile splits' were and I had no idea - - so one day I timed myself. I was running at about 5:45 per mile.... which impressed me, I didn't think I was running that fast.... but it made me think that I was not that far off the magical sub 5 minute mile! AND SO....
I started trying to break 5 minutes by running ONLY one mile on one day a week. My best before the day the USA played Russia was about 5:10.
So the day of the game.... the 2nd period ended and I told myself, "If I can break 5 minutes the USA will win this game".... and out the door I went, stop watch in hand.
I cannot remember my exact time that day... but it was under 5 minutes, not by much, but under... maybe 4:58?
