were on my backpacking trips. I'd catch the fish then wrap it in foil with some salt, pepper, maybe some lemon juice if I packed any.... then cooked on an open fire.
HOWEVER... I can't honestly say fish is better cooked that way, (even though I believe it to be true), BECAUSE....
Everything in the mountains tastes better.
On one of my first extended backpacking trips I packed some gorp (hand mixed trail mix) for power snacks. Whenever I felt I needed a little energy boost I'd grab a handful of gorp... it was great. It was great for about 4 or 5 days and THEN.... I began thinking a chunk of bark would be better than another mouthful of my gorp. I couldn't take it anymore... but it's all I had for a 'snack'....
UNTIL...
Digging down deep into my food container I discovered, (I had forgotten I packed it), one of those quick stop packages of greasy beef stick with a piece of cheese included. No doubt rated the most unhealthy food you could possible eat. I ate it..... and after several days of gorp that unhealthy beef stick that probably took 3 years off my lifespan could have been the most delicious food I've ever consumed.
