But let’s face the harsh truth. LA Rams HC Sean McVay did not carry QB Jared Goff. The Rams’ offense aligned with Goff’s skillsets for several years. When the Rams lost the Todd Gurley-powered running game, the offense tried to transform but did so at the cost of no longer suiting Jared Goff’s strengths. The Detroit Lions run a very balanced offense, a key factor in the success of Jared Goff in their system.

It's not just about running a balanced offense or not. Johnson actually invited Goff to co-create the offensive scheme with him. McVay didn't. Certainly, part of the difference is that Johnson has a much more experienced Goff to work with. But we have no reason too think that McVay loosened his exclusive grip on the offense over time ever after Goff had enjoyed success in 2017 and 2018. But Johnson did, even when working with a QB widely perceived as "damaged goods." That's just good leadership on Johnson's part and poor leadership by McVay.

I won't rehash the ugliness that developed between McVay and Goff in 2019 and 2020. But I think it's fair to say that McVay abandoned "we not me" in pretty short order when it came to his QB.

I suspect the Rams' loss will be the Lions' gain for quite some time.
