I simply can’t understand it from any angle.
McVay (I suspect) wanted Atwell so badly that he talked Snead into using the 2nd rounder on him when our WR room was already loaded. Even with Humphrey and others sitting there. Wouldn’t you presume that a smart coach like McVay had specific plans for such a bold move draft pick?
Then Atwell becomes invisible and scarcely gets used. Rather unusual for a 2nd rounder.
Fast forward to ‘22. We hear rave reviews of Atwell in camp from beat reporters and camp reporters alike. Yet no Atwell snaps in preseason. Very few snaps or targets during the season but the few targets yielded spectacular results. Yeah, the kid is small but he does get open, is blazing fast, and has really good hands. Even his harshest critics give him that. Now, even with Kupp and AR out we hardly see Atwell.
It’s almost like McVay is bi-polar on this Atwell kid. If you were HC and facing the fact of a last place O, wouldn’t you be giving everyone that produced on the field all the chances that you could?
