I understand that the defense is not the issue, and if the offense were halfway competent, the team would likely be making a playoff run, but one other thing I have been thinking about is the defensive money being spent vs. the defensive philosophy. It seems like they have two different philosophies that are opposed to one another. On the one hand, they are paying a ton of money for the pass rushing expertise of Aaron Donald. He is the piece around which this defense is built. On the other hand, they have decided that there philosophy is to play soft and give up the quick easy passes to eliminate explosives. This philosophy is negating Aaron Donald. Everybody knows that when you play the Rams, you can throw quick short passes that are not being challenged. That is also the perfect way to minimize Aaron Donald's impact on the game. Maybe with the personnel they have it is the best way to play defense, but then why bother paying Aaron Donald all that money? Just get a good run stuffing DT and spend your money elsewhere. I might be wrong, but it definitely has me scratching my head wondering if the Rams defensive plans make sense. Interested in other thoughts on this.
