That was a lot of info and explained a few things I never thought of. I have learned a lot from your posts and appreciate you taking the time to explain the concepts most of us don't understand.

I will have more things to look for during a game or replay now than I did before and will feel a little smarter while doing it! lol

1. What is a defensive scheme?
A scheme is the kind of front a team uses and the kinds of coverages it uses.

2. What is a front?
A front is the front 7, can be either a 3-4 or a 4-3 . . .or a 5-2.

Many teams use multiple fronts, including the Rams.

3. What are kinds of coverages?
There are a lot. Some teams, in old days, play a lot of Cover-1 (man-to-man with free safety)
The Seahawks, in their prime, with Legion of Boom . . .played Cover-3 Buzz. It is what they are
known for. They ran other stuff but if they played other stuff, their scheme didn't change, they
were a 4-3 team that liked cover-3

Tampa-2 was what those Bucs teams ran. They played some man, or other coverages but
DUngy liked Cover-2 because he had guys that could play it.

Fangio's preferences are a 3-4 in base but Staley helped introduce the 5-1, a six-man front
on running downs...and he likes match zones. A zone defense that turns into man once
the routes of the receivers are figured out and the routes are "matched".

Then there are pressure defenses--they can be run a zillion ways.
Dick LeBeau liked zone blitzes, he'd blitz a linebacker, but a DLman would drop to that vacated
zone.

The Bears 46 defense was a 4-3 defense shifted in a certain way and a safety comes up to make
an 8-man front.

and on and on.

So a team can vary it's coverages, or how often they blitz based on game plan. Let's say
the Rams blitzed 25% in week 4 and 10% in week 15--the "calls" ar different the scheme
is the same.

Let's say in week 3, they played 15% Cover-1 and in week 14 they played it 5%. Same
scheme different calls. Week 15 it could be 20%, Week 1 it could have been 2%

For any kind of understanding there has to be a common language.

In defensive football terms "aggressive" means pressure, blitzing, and playing man
behind it (because often that is the only option, unless it is a zone blitz) . . .

My preferred defense is a varied one, that can do it all, and I like a 4-3. I like
the 49ers defense. Not them but that scheme. Jets run it now,

Anyway, common language is a good thing. It brings conversations to conclusions
in my opinion.
