Most years, there are several teams bunched up near the top with a legitimate chance of ending up with the ring. One team must end up on top, but whichever one makes it there usually had a lot of things fall into place. This has never been more true than in 2021. The Rams were very, very lucky that a lot of things fell into place for them, not only during the playoffs (barely eking out three very close wins in a row) but also during the offseason (an opportunity to get Stafford materializing out of the blue) and during the season (picking up Von Miller and OBJ and the Cardinals fading at the end). Even if the Rams were clearly a dominant team (like the 1985 Bears, 1984 49ers, 1991 Redskins, or 1999 Rams) going into 2022, there would still be a relatively small chance (probably well under 50%) that they would repeat. They looked anything but dominant in the opening game. If things fall into place like they did last year, maybe they can get back to the Super Bowl. But it looks like it could be like another 2002 when things got ugly and the Rams missed the playoffs after a Super Bowl appearance.
