Since the Rams don't play even young rotational players in the preseason it is hard to tell how much people like Skow have progressed. Last year he proved be able to get open and he seemed to do a good job blocking and on special teams. He also showed a bad set of hands which is very concerning with a WR.
Well it looks like we will start to find out it would be surprising if Van plays on Thursday after not practicing for weeks and if he does play I suspect it will be limited. So it is reasonable that Skow will get some snaps as the WR3 on Thursday. This will give us our first hint as his development. I am not sure what his ceiling is but I would guess a WR3/4 would be about it.
McCutcheon looks like a guy that has a much higher ceiling than Skow. He looks like a WR2/3 from a ceiling perspective. Not really too sure where he is from a blocking and special teams perspective but I would guess he is behind Skow in both of those areas. I think the Rams were in need of production at the WR3 position for an extended period of time that McCutcheon would jump Skow and grab that spot. However, I think they let him get comfortable being on the team and getting ready for games until he knows the routine. Skow is probably a better WR4 at this time because he does so many other things and they don't really need him to be a big threat on offense.
Anyway McCutcheon has looked great and I suspect that later in the season we will start to see him in actual games.
