As I understand it, Donald isn't trying to renegotiate the terms of his current deal - he and the Rams are working on an extension to that deal. If they do agree on an extension it would be a deal for the 2025 season and beyond rather than paying him more money for years that are covered by his current contract.
The extension might include a restructure of his current deal (such as converting some of his 2022 money into a signing bonus, which would give the Rams some cap relief this year), but any new money wouldn't kick in until the 2025 season.
