I could be way off base but I look at it this way. What would Miller have given them this year? 10 sacks? 11 maybe? Let's say that. Could Hollins, Lewis and Garrett combine for 8 or 9? I think so.
And I think the defense overall could be stronger having gone from very weak to very strong at the ILB tandem even if that edge spot opposite Floyd drops off a bit.
No question that Wagner instantly bolsters ILB Big Time. Will be interesting to see how Morris utilizes him.
But as to ‘replacing’ a Von Miller? With essentially 2nd tier players? I think you may be oversimplifying there a bit. Miller was so much more than X number of sacks. He was stellar at containing the edge, too. Then there’s the nuanced impact of such a talent requiring game planning and devoting extra resources to deal with him by opposing O thereby making the jobs of the rest of the Ram front 5 a bit easier. Maybe a lot easier.
I do know this. Once that front 7 gelled they were devastating in Rams’ playoff run. In fact, Rams finished season and playoffs with a 10-1 record. And that one loss was by 3 points to the 49ers in game 18. Shoulda been another win, but I digress.
I give Miller a ton of credit for that D turnaround. Once he gelled then Lewis, OBO, Garrett and even Hollins rarely even sniffed the field.
Potentially, Quinn could have a similar impact on this D. Big time players make big time plays. Could ultimately make the difference in a close playoff game en route to the SB.
Rams haven’t skimped at QB, WR, DL, ILB, other Edge, or CB. Why not go the last 9 yards with Quinn?
Just sayin’. At least something to think about, huh?
