There are almost no other defenses that let a cornerback go head to head against a Chase, an Evans, a Hopkins, and in most cases give zero help. For better or worse, the Rams trust Ramsey to lock onto these Alpha receivers and many fans are shocked when he gives up a big play.
But here is what I have seen, in the Superbowl and the Tampa game, when Ramsey got beat. When you have a receiver like that, and you have the Rams' pass rush, virtually all routes level off at the top of the route tree. There simply isn't enough time for 9 routes when the Rams' front is bearing down, and Ramsey uses that fact in his decision-making. That is, he times his break at the receiver's top of his route tree, and he is in position to make a play 90% of the time. But without safety help, he has to be right 100% of the time, whereas most corners have the luxury of a safety over the top when guarding Hopkins or Chase or Devante Adams, etc.
In both the Tampa Bay game and the Superbowl, Brady and Burrows very deftly sidestepped the oncoming pressure or they never would have been able to reset and throw deep like they did. Ramsey was calculating a shorter route and got beat, but only because he has to guard about 150 sq yards of field with no help other than the sideline. When he does show that he is human, people act like he is not doing incredible work on these impossible to cover receivers.
