The tapes show to me that he's still good, but certainly has lost some.
Rams need more secondary help imo, If a Wagner deal prevents Rams from getting secondary or line help, then I wouldn't do it.
Run Defense: He's still good. Can still sniff out the play and he his tackling is still good. However, when he is fooled, he can't recover as well anymore. This is when you see the Seahawks give up long runs.. you'll see that Wagner is in the wrong gap or has floated to the wrong side in a misdirection and he can't get back fast enough. Kittle can outrun Wagner.
Rushing the QB: That's not his role. That's Jamal Adams' job based on the Seahawks scheme.
Pass Defense: Wagner is pretty much in pass coverage. He'll be at the spot, but for those that want players to challenge the ball, that's not him. People will catch it and he will tackle them immediately. So if the sticks are 8 yards and the receiver is at 8 yards.. expect the receiver to catch it and get the first down with Wagner covering.
Watching Rams games to assess Wagner isn't great. Divisional teams know how to maintain the stars. Wagner has his worst games against the Rams and it's not surprising. Seahawks have him doubling Kupp most of the time, so he's pretty much out of the play. I was also searching for the missed tackles that were logged in the week 5 game. I think they called a missed tackle when he was in the hole ready to tackle but then got pushed in the back by Corbett or someone. He went flying and whiffed on the RB. should have been called a penalty against the Rams, but we got away with that lol.
Against the Niners, he isn't great either and can't get out on the edge. He's mainly a center field guy.
What is interesting is watching non divisional teams play against Wagner as they aren't used to scheming against him and getting a lineman to come off their block to engage him.
If he's asking for huge money and long term.. no way.. I wouldn't sign him.
If it's rational money, short term, that gives the front office flexibility to beef up the secondary or line, then fine.
