Many great Refs have had other jobs over the years. I blame the NFL and the saturation of rules. NOTHING is cut n dry anymore. There are soooo many variations of what is or isn't a catch. The personal fouls.....I STILL say the players are to blame..When they started seeking attorneys and pointing fingers at the NFL for post career injuries, "Roughing" calls exploded! Players demanded safety and better conditions. Well...Here we are! Look at Jim McMahan..He was one of the ones that was profiled over post career memory loss and such. WELL...Hard to blame the NFL for all the pregame headbutts he did with his O Line. Interesting how cute it was in 1985, eh?? It's time for the NFL to simplify the game again. Just look at ANY game on Youtube from 1990 prior. VERY VERY few penalties and Ref huddles. These days, almost EVERY game has a controversial call of....Interpretation.
