The top seed in each conference gets advantages that don't seem to be proportionate to the achievement. For example, let's consider a case in which Team A is the top seed and Team B is the second seed. Both teams have the same record, but Team A had a better conference record. Team A is in the weakest division in the NFL (no wild card teams from that division), they were matched against the weakest division in the other conference (no wild card teams from that division), and their 17th game was against the worst team. Team B is in the strongest division of the NFL (two wild card teams from that division), they were matched against the strongest division in the other conference (two wild card teams from that division), and their 17th game was against the reigning Super Bowl Champion. I don't have any suggestions on how to do it better, but getting home field advantage AND a bye seems to go too far in stacking the odds in one team's favor.
