I thought these were from Matt year. Question though. Why do they call it this way? I'm not one to question Stanley or Morris so there's that. But why give up such an easy pitching catch on third and manageable like that?
and I have never defended it, I have just tried to explain it
the theory is, they watch the route develop, then break to the ball. An NFL-level QB is not going to show where he is going
defenders these days cannot "read the QBs eyes" so there is no need to cover someone before you know where they
are going, they will beat your butt.
So, if one of those routes is an option route, you have to wait until you know if it is an "in" or "out" and you may have
an Lber on the inside and a slot defender on the outside
So, they try to break when the QB shows his "front shoulder intentions" or when he takes his hand off the ball--not his eyes
THEN break to the ball. They cover the guy (in theory) when they identify the route and "match" it. And get within arms length
and break get an arm out, and challenge the ball, disrupt the receiver, get an hand in there, grab a little cloth.
NFL rules are totally in favor of the offense. Defenses have to do the best they can. And if a CB starts biting on short stuff in man coverage, the
receivers will read it instantly, as will the QB, the CB will be flat-footed and what WAS a slant for 8 yards converts into a sluggo for 50 yards
and a TD if the safety does not get there.
So, if your defenders are smart and can recognize routes fast, and can "get there" you can break up some of these. And you DLmen can defleted one of them or two of them a game. The QB will miss one or two a game. A WR will drop them on occasion. There will be a misread by the Qb and WR...the WR will read inside leverage by the defender and the QB will see outside and it will be a miss, the ball can bitthe shoulder pad of a WR and pop up and get picked
or, it can be completed---
The theory is that rather than old soft zone, here it is aggressive zone ONCE THE ROUTE REVEALS---don't cover gree grass, dover cover before the route reveals because the WR will read that a fake you out of your jock. get help from the next zone guy who also is reading the routes
that is the theory
