I also see a very basic level without much challenge to routes and receivers being run. I also see a very easy-to-read coverage and overall D run out there week in and week out. It's not that hard for an NFL-level QB to find the soft match-up or soft player and expose them.
Then why are the Rams running it?
Why did Staley run it?
Why does Barry run it?
Why does 1/3 fit into that basic scheme?
Sorry you are offended, but unless you keep up
with your trade, you get left behind. It's not
an insult, it's a fact.
And as has been pointed out, the Rams
defensive passer rating this year is 7th best?
Of that Staley-esque group
Bills --1st
Giants --6th
Rams-- 7th
Packers-- 8th
Saints-- 10th
Panthers-- 15th
Browns --16th
Chargers-- 18th
49ers-- 23rd
Jets-- 31st
Wash --32nd
So of all the teams in the PFF "Staley cluster"
only Bills and Giants doing better in defensive passer rating
and in the run fits only the Saints are better--and the Bills
are 3rd
So----what you think you are seeing---is not happening.
WHile the Rams defense is not perfect, nor the kind I like
to see their match-4 is very common and if you say you watch
other teams and the All-22 you'd see lots of forms
of it. Rought 1/3 of the NFL uses it and Rams play it better
than most
yes, not as good as last year but better than most.
Pick up a book on match quarters, brush up. there are
lots of vids out there, you'll see your 1970s D-I
coverages are not the same as today. They just are not.
Guys don't cover "green grass", they cover the plays
that cause the most problems. they try to get an extra
defender to the three-receiver side. Get the best defenders
where the receivers can make two-way breaks, the harder
routes to cover (option routes). The play off because
the short routes won't kill you. The chuck plays will
Analytics will. And the key is matching the route and making
a great break on the ball when the Qb shows his shoulder
intentions.
It's just not dropping to a zone and playing a man.
