I actually did not mind McVay’s call to go for it on fourth down from their own 29-yard line, in the first quarter and down 7-0. And, analytically speaking, going for it was the right call (Ben Baldwin’s decision-making algorithm added 2.8 percent in win probability by doing so, should the play have succeeded). The call itself was puzzling. McVay, who watched running back Darrell Henderson get stopped by safety Adrian Amos on a manageable third-and-2 for just a 1-yard gain on the previous play, called another run with a yard to gain and Henderson was again stuffed by Amos in the A-gap for no gain.
