I’ve been mulling over this for quite some time now.
Sadly, I’ve come to the conclusion that McVay sucks at STs. And what’s worse is that I’m not sure he realizes how bad he is at them. Dan Campbell outcoached McVay because of STs. It was no accident that Campbell was winking at sideline reporters about having another ST trick play to use against the clueless Rams STs.
McVay needs to get his head out of his azz and learn STs. He sucks at them just as Martz did.
We can blame the ST coaches all we want but the real issue is McVay.
Is anybody happy with Rams ST this year or last? Me neither.
Hekker and Gay have been solid but every other unit has disappointed, and DeCamillis can take no credit for either.
So, I’m forced to concede that McVay has been 0-2 on his last 2 ST coordinator hires. Strange because McVay excels at hiring other asst coaches.
Draft resources were invested in ST types but DeCamillis has seemingly squandered them. It all starts with the coordinator hires because a HC needs to be able to largely let each coordinator do his damned job. And McVay is already heavily invested in his O, so how much time does he really have to babysit his DC and ST coordinators?
I suspect that these 2 things will be addressed next offseason.
