Is it the coordinator, the D as a whole, the line, the backers, the DB's?
The DC doesn't help, nor do the injuries to our CB's or Long's inability to cover, but I think we have to consider the ILB's.
Neither Phillips or Staley put much interest in the position so we've managed to get by on free agents and low draft picks. The key to Staley's defense was the OLB's, whether they played pass, rushed or defended the run. If Morris is true to his Kiffin/Tamps roots, he places the that decision on the ILB's.
Let's be honest, our ILB group is pretty weak. Young is a decent player, but I think we've seen his ceiling. Reeder can flash but, for the most part, is weak. Kiser, despite getting player of the week last season, didn't even make the roster. Howard is too small, Jones is still learning the pro game. If we can see improvement from the ILB's, then maybe the safeties don't have to play as much run support and can play better coverage.
