You know; I still bristle at those who think that somehow the Rams were foolish to ditch Goff or to do it how they did it. Or to in the same breath equate Goff and Stafford.
Holmes isn't stupid. He knew when he made the trade that Goff was a 2 year solution at most. 1 year and then they draft a QB. 2nd year the rookie sits on the bench and learns as the Lions suffer through another losing season, but get premium draft picks because of it.
If one wants to turn off the TV for the last 10 years and only look at a stats sheet, OK. But that simply doesn't tell the story of Stafford and then later, Goff.
Goff was declining; why I don't know. But the exact things that got him traded from LA are of course happening in Detroit. Nothing about Detroit's make-up is going to help him. That's who he is (or at least, who he's become).
This isn't a "hate Goff" diatribe. By all measure he's a nice young man and a good teammate. He would play in pain. He even got the Rams to a Superbowl. But for a mysterious reason, once he got paid, it was downhill in a hurricane. I don't understand it, but all we have to do is watch the games. And I'm not sure whether getting the big contract and then regressing are connected, or not. McVay couldn't stand it any longer.
In the end, it doesn't matter. The Rams vastly upgraded with Stafford. If the Rams can't get to the Superbowl, it won't be Stafford's fault any more than GB not getting to a Superbowl would be Rogers' fault. QB is well set.
