I, too, see this as an indictment of Allen (and not Corbett). And as such I understand the logic of kicking the tires on Gaillard to see if he's an upgrade over Allen, especially when there's no real cost (waivers) as opposed to spending valuable draft capital to do so.
And who knows, maybe Allen would beat Gaillard out anyway. I still don't think it's a bad idea to try to upgrade the back end of your roster when you can ...
