The best RBs will not do much behind a poor OL. I agree with the idea that this could galvanize the OL that much more to say "ok, it's up to us, we're going to run the ball well regardless."
You need talent at RB, no doubt. And losing Akers is an unquestionable hit. But if the OL is good, running the ball WILL come together. It just will.
