The Rams will definitely not be in the top half of the league in cap space in 2022. But they'll hardly be in 'cap hell' either. Really, cap hell is sort of a '90s NFL term, isn't it? I can't recall hardly any teams really being in that spot in recent years.
A few things I think:
- The Rams NEED Donald, Ramsey, Stafford, Kupp, Woods and Floyd to all stay really good for at least the next 2 years, ideally 3. Those guys just can't be cut...
- If you assume Whitworth finally retires in 2022 that does free up quite a bit of 2022 cap space. Add in some presumptive cuts from lower tier guys (i.e. Demby, Blanton, Calais, etc.) and that, yes, they'll likely be able to carry over a couple million in 2021 cap into next year.
They should then roughly end up between $14-17M under the 2022 cap (give or take). Certainly not enough to make any big FA splashes and probably in the bottom 7-8 in the league in cap space. But more than enough to make things work. Perhaps enough to keep one of either Joseph-Day, Corbett or Williams if they want to. Those are really the only three UFA they remotely have to worry about next March.
More cap space possibilities. Hav, and Robinson. Combined with Whitworth, that's a little more than 25 M.
