We can’t thank you enough for all you bring to this board on draft matters, Dead. Truly a board treasure, man.
A very thorough breakdown in this post. Fair and balanced as they say.
Only time will tell as to how well Rams chose this year, but as of right now a lot of us are scratching our heads and still trying to wrap our minds around the strategy starting with Atwell.
I will say this. Rams put great store in analytics and in character references when grading their prospects. No doubt have access to medicals, both physical and psychological that the general public will never even sniff. So there is that. We’ll soon see if Rams have outsmarted themselves by trying to be the smartest kids in the room.
Normally I come away from a Snead/McVay draft nodding my head and saying, ‘I see what they did there and why they did it’.
For example, here’s the 2020 draft.
Drafted Players
Full 2020 Draft
Rnd Player Pick Pos
2 Cam Akers 52 RB
2 Van Jefferson 57 WR
3 Terrell Lewis 84 LB
3 Terrell Burgess 104 S
4 Brycen Hopkins 136 TE
6 Jordan Fuller 199 S
7 Clay Johnston 234 LB
7 Sam Sloman 248 K
7 Tremayne Anchrum 250
The picks had value that anybody could see at the time and the Ram fit was obvious. I loved that draft by round 4 not knowing what a HR Fuller was gonna be and how solid Anchrum would turn out to be. Helluva draft.
That draft set the standard, IMO.
This one left me blindsided. Too many wild swings, too many apparent reaches. I’ve called it Amateur Hour and I’m sticking by that until proven otherwise. Seems so un-Snead/McVay like. Almost like Matt Millen was running things, you know?
Frankly, I’m beginning to worry that Brad Holmes was the force behind the previous good recent Rams drafts. Gulp...
