If the Rams hadn't traded #88 to the 49ers who's to say that the 49ers wouldn't have traded up to #89 to get Sermon? Cleveland traded the 89th pick to Carolina who then and then traded the pick to Houston. The 90th pick was also traded. The 91st pick was also traded. As was the 92nd and the 94th. And the 98th.
The point being, a lot of teams were trading out of that area of the draft, and if the Rams didn't trade with the 49ers there's a real good chance someone else would have. Bottom line: Sermon was most likely going to be a 49er no matter what the Rams did or didn't do.
So with that reality, why wouldn't the Rams take advantage of the opportunity to improve their draft position by getting those two picks from the 49ers? Later today we can post that the 49ers handed the Rams
two players in the draft which, according to your favorite draft value board, collectively have more value than Sermon.
Obviously this will have to play out over the next 4 years, but it could conceivably work out that the Rams won this trade.
So to answer your question - why would the Rams help the 49ers? Because, in the Rams' opinion, the 49ers helped the Rams more than the Rams helped the 49er.
