that is simply not true though

Elite OL players play just one position.

My theory is this. The elite Oline guys play 1 spot on the Oline. Good players can play more than 1. This notion of being able to play G then switch to center should be for the backup group of guys on the Oline.Versatility is great for that group and makes all the sense in the world. But if that is the philosophy for all of your Oline guys then you end up with Jacks of all trades and Masters of none. We need a starting center who excells at playing center. Period. We need 5 guys who excell at their position and 5 guys who can play more than 1. Blythe was a perfect backup player, not a starter. Somehwhere in the next few months we need to get a Center.

I don't think a word of that is true.

Doug Smith played some guard before he became the Rams last really good center.

Harrah was a college tackle before moving to guard.

Saffold could play tackle--as he demonstrated--but then thrived at guard.

Whitworth began his NFL career at guard, where he played for a few years before moving to LOT.

The 99 team? McCollum played some guard in the NFL before switching to center with the Rams.

Fred Miller played guard in 98 before switching to ROT in 99.

It just goes on and on. And those are just the Rams. Bruce Matthews played every OL position, all at a high level, in his long and illustrious career. Hall of famer Jonathan Ogden started his NFL career at guard.

There is NO hard and fast rule about any of this. Some players can switch positions, some can't, some are good up to and including elite even though they aren't good candidates to switch positions, some are good up to and including elite even though they ARE good candidates to switch positions.

The only rule that really counts is that generally, fewer OL candidates will make good LOTs.
